10 Horror Movies You Never Thought Were Based on Real-Life Events
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974, 2003)
The plot may be fictional but the killer, Leatherface, is based on a real-life murderer Ed Gein who did his crimes in Wisconsin. Unlike Leatherface, Ed did not use chainsaw to kill his victims. He shot them. He did, however, wear their skin as a mask. He also created a body suit with female breasts and genitalia. Gross! He also inspired the character of Norman Bates in Psycho as well as Buffalo Bill from The Silence of the Lambs.
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
No, relax, there is no Freddy Krueger. But there was a sequence of deaths connected to nightmares in the 1970s. These events inspired the writer/director Wes Craven. The LA Times reported that a group of Cambodian immigrants were having terrible nightmares and died in their sleep. Sweet dreams tonight, everyone.
