15 Hygiene Practices of The Middle Ages That Might Make You A Bit Nauseous
A Cure to Baldness?
A 17th century publication by Peter Levens was supposed to help men to cure their thinning hair and pattern baldness.
The recipe was quite strange, though. The users were supposed to combine potassium salts with chicken droppings, and place the result on the affected area.
For hair removal, a different recipe was used. The men had to make a mash consisting of eggs, strong vinegar, and cat dung, and then apply it to the hairy area. Quite creepy!
Lead-Lined Water Containers
The rich people paid private water companies for their drinking water but their water was not much better than that used by the poor.
The main water supply was held in elm trunks and domestic pipes that were lined with lead. The water that was stored in huge lead tanks often became stagnant.
