Houses in the Middle Ages did not have roofs like the ones houses have today. It was a usual thing that droppings of bugs and pests would just fall onto the clean bedding.
However, people invented four-poster beds in order to keep a canopy. The canopy was supposed to catch all the unpleasant stuff that fell from the roof and keep the bedding safe and clean.
